Games to learn to read: All people have the ability to learn to read, but this learning is not easy. Reading is a skill that, once mastered, may seem simple, almost natural, but that involves the set-up of a set of processes in a synchronized manner and whose learning can be complicated. Learning to read is one of the tasks that cost the most children of school age and the problems related to reading entail much of the school failure. We can help children learn to read through some games.

Why is it important to learn to read, encourage reading from an early age?

Reading is not a mechanical act, learning to read is much more than knowing the letters and combining them properly, learning to read involves starting a series of processes and developing the cognitive ability of the person. To think that reading is to know the letters and that to learn to read is enough to teach the letters to the child is a severe error, to learn to read we have to develop the cognitive skills related to reading that would allow us to extract the meanings of the message, establish relationships of information, take out non-textual information, etc.

10 games to teach to read

There are some games to teach to read, which are activities designed to motivate children and to turn reading into a playful action. These activities to learn reading is based on the training of cognitive skills that come into play with reading and therefore favor the understanding of text and message.

. Make the letters with the body. A very entertaining game for children, which will awaken their attention and motivate them, is to use our body to make letters. If for each word, we ask the child to make a letter with his body, we get him to not only memorize the letters, but to process them.

. playing I Spy. It’s a pretty fun game for the little ones, and it helps them start an approach with the letters and the words. In this game, a person thinks a word (it has to be a word that names an object that all the participants can see), the person says I Spy, a word that begins with the little letter…. and indicates the first letter. The other players have to guess the word.

. Identify each letter with an object, character, etc. For example, capital A is a mountain, m is a bridge, p is a chair, etc. And we help children write by mentioning with each letter their corresponding sequence of characters or objects; in this way, the child better understands the letters.

. Make lists of words with similar sounds. It is about helping children develop phonological awareness, the relationship of letters to their sounds, and go beyond the mere knowledge of the letter.

. Crosswords are an excellent option for children since they train the understanding of meaning, learn to understand definitions, and develop vocabulary.

. Letter soup. Letter soup is another fun game that helps children learn to read.

. Naming all the words that occur to us that begin with a letter. Another entertaining game consists of naming all the words that occur to us that begin with a specific letter. With this activity, we develop the phonological fluidity of children.

. Completing words with hidden letters or phrases with missing words. It is an activity that helps children think as they read and understand to find the most appropriate letter or word while maintaining the meaning of the phrase or making sense of the word.

. Word strings This game consists of making a sequence of words, a line, each word has to start with the last syllable of the previous word. For example, house-toad-stew-boss-Frederick-kitchen-…

. Bingo of words. This is the classic bingo, but instead of numbers, we have to complete with words.

. Union of phrases. In this case we have two different phrases that the child has to unite meaningfully. In this way we train the comprehension of sentences and the use of connectors.
